![]() Doesn't matter what day or time it is! Take that broom 2 weeks from now, if you haven't used it too much and, at the risk of a dusty floor, try it again! That same broom will probably STILL stand a couple of weeks after the social media adorned sweet time of broom standing uppery!!! Good luck. If you have a flat surface and a broom that's got firm enough and flat enough bristles, you too can make your broom stand - granting you have the patience to try! And here's the kicker. I came home to see my broom standing on its own but sadly no one had swept. On Monday, the viral trend which first circulated on social media in 2012 made the rounds once again after a false claim spread on Twitter that NASA said broomsticks can only stand upward. With a 16½-by-4½-inch footprint, its large head covers wide swaths of floor. The only (simple) science involved is pure balance. Even a great broom needs a dust mop to help finish the job, and the Bona Premium Microfiber Mop is the best we tested. What you might not know is that the chance of standing a broom on end in pretty high, too, but when was the last time you TRIED it? There's no mystery science here, everyone! No special gravitational pull, or position of space of the Earth, or full moon thing going on. The truth is, the idea of a broom standing up by itself because of the earths gravitational pull is nothing new. Post this on Facebook"!!! Fact is, the chances of finding a red Coke can are pretty high. Well, as the pragmatic scientist on board, I just have to say "C'mon, folks"! Boy, it appears that if someone threw a picture of a red can of Coca-Cola onto Facebook a few thousand others would pull one out of their fridge proclaiming, "YES! Mine is red, too. But, WHY? Well, along with the pics you'll read about NASA saying it will only happen today, or it's because of the full moon or gravity or the Earth's orbit. But it might make sense to wear these in a room kept clean with regular vacuuming and dusting.Well, in today's version of "is the dress blue and black or white and gold", we are seeing pictures on social media of brooms mysteriously standing on their bristles. Scooting yourself along a wall or stretch-dancing your way into corners is also awkward. From our prior experience of owning a similar product, we found you can’t cover nearly enough ground to truly clean a floor before dust-mop slippers load up with debris. Users claimed NASA said Monday was the only day brooms could stand upright due to the earth’s gravitational pull. The bottom line? The shoes aren’t effective enough to replace a good dust mop, but they are fun to wear and will actually capture dust if you slide across the floor Risky Business–style. The silly viral meme swept the internet with some misinformation. The bottoms of the shoes come off easily, and you can put them in the washer, like regular dust-mop pads. The ringlets are made of coral fleece (a heavier fabric than polar fleece) and chenille (a top choice for dust-mop material). ![]() ![]() We found that we loved shuffling around in the fluffy house shoes while picking up dust, and the floppy beige ringlets felt distinctly Muppet-like. While researching this guide, we discovered the Hanitom Lazy Mop Slippers and became obsessed. Also, the Casabella broom doesn’t come with a dustpan, but we have that covered. This broom doesn’t come with a warranty, but our long-term testers report that it’s still going strong. And the bristles are thinner than those on other brooms, so the head feels soft and pliable. The Casabella broom was also the most balanced, and its handle was the most comfortable to hold of any model we tested. ![]() And the bristles are soft enough to spread out a bit at the contact. This broom cleaned spills of cat litter, flour, rice, and diatomaceous earth (which we used to simulate dust particles of varying size) better than any other model we tested. The broom can stand by itself, because the center of gravity is directly above the edge on which it balances. The broom’s 2,548 bristles (by our count) are densely packed and distributed evenly, and they have flagged (split) tips, which excel at picking up fine, dusty debris. Since the 2014 version of this guide, Casabella has changed the model slightly (it hasn’t updated the online photos to reflect this), but the slightly smaller head isn’t any less powerful. After eight years as our top pick, the Casabella Wayclean Wide Angle Broom is still the single best sweeper we’ve tested, with a bristle quantity, design, texture, and density no other broom could match.
